coming soon

Rest assured, doggo is coming soon.  We experienced some delays due to new functionality that was implemented that should make the install process 256 times easier.  The original plan was to have a massive download with all the goodies that you could want in a home system, the expectation being that this system would be treated like a full fledged server.  The plan was then to have different downloads depending on different types of installations, for instance just a media client that would pull from the main doggo unit, or a completely different use like a point of sale system for use in businesses like restaurants and bars.  However this has radically changed for the better.

Instead doggo is now installed with the logic core, and an interface.  Every other feature is now easily accessible via the download doggo repository inside the XBMC front end.  The interesting feature here is that any aspect of doggo, from plugin additions to complete application installs down to the core can be done through this mechanism, not just XBMC plugins or addons. This was done with no code modification to XBMC, maintaining our desire for pure installs (no changes to source code at any level) and only profile customization for doggo integration. This ensures updates are both swift and painless. So as these open source applications evolve, doggo will evolve simultaneously.  Nothing is more irritating than waiting six months for an update to occur, or worse becoming buggy due to errant changes or reducing flexibility due to hard coded customization.  Projects are open source for a reason, so the user has control over how they user their software.

The other addition was a new security method for the system panel and settings dialogues in the web controller.  Instead of using complicate certificate system for encryption purposes, we rely on the wireless security for the first line of defense.  However this did not keep users who have legitimate access to the remotes, from also accessing the various settings pages.  Not only did we implement a password protection mechanism, but also security method that constantly modulates the web code for the end user, but stays consistent inside the logic core.  This helps keep the web controller quick and painless to use, but secure enough to keep unwanted users from gaining access to settings, like through a history link in an open browser.  Doggo is a security system at its heart, and it made sense to add this feature for another layer of protection, without cost to any speed or efficiency.

So despite the delay, doggo’s release will be here extremely soon.  We want doggo to succeed, and to do that we want to ensure the product defies expectations out of the gate. Remember, doggo’s purpose is to create a free platform for automation, security, and multimedia that is endless in potential, easy to innovate from and more importantly even easier to setup and use.  So look for a release date, and install instructions very soon.  We promise it will be well worth the wait!
